A brilliant 7-wicket haul from left-arm spinner Daniel Doram helped the Leeward Islands Hurricanes secure an easy victory over Jamaica Scorpions.
At Torouba, inclement weather reduced the match to 49-overs a side. Batting first, the Scorpions batters struggled to face the new ball as both Alzarri Joseph and Oshane Thomas surprised the batters with pace, swing, and bounce. Jospeh got rid of Kirk McKenzie for 1 and Jermaine Blackwood for a second ball duck. Justin Greaves then got Chadwick Walton out for 16 from a sharp rising delivery, which was taken by wicket-keeper Jahmar Hamilton. A brief 25-run partnership between Andre McCarthy (13) and Nkrumah Bonner (24) ensued before Daniel Doram was introduced to the attack. He spun webs around the batters as they played and missed numerous times. His spell triggered a massive collapse for the Jamaican side as they lost their last 7 wickets for just 70 runs. The only partnership of note was a 36-run stand between captain Rovman Powell (13) and Odean Smith (26). They tried to counterattack, but they too eventually, fell to Doram. In the end, Jamaica could only muster 123 all out in 32.5 overs.
In reply, Leewards’ opener Keiran Powell blazed his way to an unbeaten 36-ball 80, which included 6 fours and 6 sixes. His destructive innings diminished any hopes Jamaica had of defending their below par total. Along the way, Powell lost Kofi James (12) and Keacy Carty (4) as they, too, were in a hurry to get to the target. Karima Gore joined him, and together, they produced an unbeaten stand of 68 to lead their team to an 8-wicket victory with 35 overs to spare.
