A pulsating T20 encounter at the Demerara Cricket Club Ground lived up to its billing on Wednesday night as Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) edged the American Cricket Society (ACS) by five wickets in a high-scoring, error-strewn contest that swung wildly before being decided with two balls to spare.
Set a daunting 227 for victory, DCC rode a wave of momentum shifts, missed chances in the field, and a brutal late onslaught from Jonathan Van Lange to seal victory at 227/5 in 19.4 overs, in response to ACS’s imposing 226/6.
From the outset, the match ebbed and flowed. ACS, after being sent in, stumbled early but recovered through a mixture of calculated aggression and timely reprieves, as DCC put down several chances at crucial moments. Those lapses proved costly, allowing Bhaskar Yadram to anchor the innings with a magnificent unbeaten 96 off 44 balls, while Akeem Dewar provided the late impetus.
There were periods where DCC appeared to have regained control—particularly when wickets fell in clusters—but ACS consistently wrestled back momentum through aggressive strokeplay. Kwame Patton Jr’s brisk 29 ensured the innings never stagnated, and a strong finish propelled ACS to what looked a match-winning total.
However, the chase mirrored the uncertainty of the first innings.
DCC’s reply began brightly, but ACS clawed their way back through key breakthroughs, applying pressure with disciplined spells. Just when the visitors seemed to be tightening their grip, the game tilted again.
Captain Tevin Imlach injected urgency into the chase with a breezy 30 off just 14 balls, shifting the tempo and placing ACS briefly on the back foot. His dismissal at 109/4 marked yet another turning point, with the pendulum swinging once more.
Enter Brandon Jaikaran.
The left-hander produced a composed and crucial 58 from 29 deliveries, expertly managing the middle overs while rebuilding the innings. With wickets falling at intervals, Jaikaran ensured DCC remained within striking distance even as the required rate climbed.
Still, ACS had opportunities to shut the door but were again let down by lapses in the field, with dropped chances proving increasingly costly.
With 84 runs required off the final five overs, the match hung delicately in the balance.
What followed was sheer carnage.
Jonathan Van Lange unleashed a ferocious assault, taking apart the bowling of Chatram Balgobin and Suresh Dhanai. Boundaries flowed freely, the pressure evaporated, and in a matter of deliveries, the equation shifted dramatically. Even when 18 runs were needed from the final over, the contest remained alive—but Van Lange had other ideas.
In a breathtaking finish, he dismantled the attack with clean, powerful hitting, guiding DCC home with two balls to spare.
Van Lange’s unbeaten 68 off 28 balls, punctuated by eight towering sixes, sealed a remarkable victory and left the home crowd in raptures.
The win underscored DCC’s resilience while highlighting ACS’s inability to capitalize on key moments, particularly in the field where costly errors proved decisive in such a tightly contested affair.
The ACS Goodwill Tour of Guyana 2026 now moves to its next stop, where the visitors will face the home side at the iconic GCC Ground, Bourda, in what promises to be another exciting clash.
