West Indies have failed to qualify for the 2023 ODI World Cup in India after losing to Scotland in the Super Six stage of the ongoing World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe. Only the two finalists of that tournament make it to the World Cup in India later this year, and West Indies now mathematically can’t reach the final.
They had only just made it to the 2019 ODI World Cup in England, via the World Cup Qualifiers, where they sneaked into the final at the expense of, coincidentally, Scotland in a rain-hit game. This will be the first edition of the ODI World Cup that the two-time champions will not feature. They failed to gain direct entry to the world cup after finishing 9th in the ODI Super League points standings and as a result, they were placed in the World Cup Qualifiers.
Their journey began with comfortable victories over USA and Nepal by 39 runs and 101 runs respectively, which earned them a spot in the Super Six stage. Unfortunately, it all went downhill from there. They then lost to Zimbabwe by 35 runs and Netherlands via a Super Over which made their task of qualifying for the World Cup even more challenging. They would’ve needed to win all their matches in the Super Six stage and hope other results go their way for them to qualify but that was not to be after collapsing to their third consecutive defeat. This result was another display of the decline of West Indies’ cricket.
